Curly Hair Specialists

What is a curly hair specialist, and why should I see one?

A curly hair specialist is a hairdresser with extensive training and expertise in cutting, styling, and caring for curly hair.

If you have curly hair, seeing a specialist ensures that your unique curl pattern is understood and catered to, resulting in a haircut and care regimen that enhances your natural curls.

Natacha has received training from Lorraine Massey, author of the best-selling book "The Curly Girl Method," and Nubia Rezo, founder of the Rezo Cut. Since opening in 2019, she has helped thousands of clients.

What's the difference between a regular hairdresser and a curly hair specialist?

A regular hairdresser often does not have the specialized training and expertise in cutting and styling curly hair.

A curly hair specialist understands the unique needs of curly hair and provides tailored solutions for better outcomes.

Booking an Appointment

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, it is highly recommended. Curly hair appointments are longer than a standard cut and there is very little chance we can take you on the day. The easiest way is to book your appointment online.

First-time clients: your appointment will take up to 2 hours, so plan your day accordingly.

What are your opening hours?

We are open Wednesday to Saturday, 9am–5pm. We are closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

You'll find us at 687–691 Anzac Parade, Maroubra NSW 2035. You can also reach us at 0416 726 687 or hello@curlsbynatacha.com.

What can I expect during my appointment?

During a consultation, the specialist will assess your hair's texture, curl pattern, and condition. We will discuss your styling preferences, lifestyle, and haircare routine to tailor a plan that meets your specific needs.
If you booked for a cut, the specialist will cut your hair dry, in its usual form, then proceed to cleanse your hair, followed by conditioning, styling, and drying.
If you booked for an education session, you will receive extra education tailored to your hair and lifestyle.

What is your cancellation policy?

We ask that you give us as much notice as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule. Because curly hair appointments are longer, last-minute cancellations have a real impact on our small team. Please refer to our cancellation policy page on the website for full details.

Do you take new clients?

Yes! New clients are very welcome. We love meeting curly heads at every stage of their curl journey — whether you've never had a specialist cut before, or you're coming to us after years of not knowing what to do with your hair.

Many of our clients say their first visit was the first time they ever left a hairdresser truly loving their hair.

Your Appointment

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, it is highly recommended. Curly hair appointments are longer than a standard cut and there is very little chance we can take you on the day. The easiest way is to book your appointment online.

First-time clients: your appointment will take up to 2 hours, so plan your day accordingly.

How should I prepare my hair before coming in?

Because we cut curly hair dry and in its natural state, how you arrive matters a great deal. It's best to arrive with your hair in its natural, dry state without any heavy products.

Please come in with your hair:

  • Freshly washed and detangled
  • Dried and styled the way you normally wear it
  • Hanging loosely — no ponytails, buns, braids, clips or hats
  • Free from heat styling (no straighteners or curling irons)

This allows us to see your curls' true texture and see your true curl pattern to give you the best cut possible. If your hair has been in a bun or ponytail since you last washed it, please start fresh.

Tip: if you currently use products with sulfates, silicones or heavy oils, try to avoid them for 1–2 weeks before your appointment — your curls will be softer and more defined, which helps us see exactly what we're working with.

How long will my appointment take?

First-time clients: allow up to 2 hours. This includes a consultation, the cut, a styling coaching session and drying time.

Returning clients: appointments typically take 60–90 minutes depending on your hair length and the services booked.

Colour appointments will take longer.

What happens during the consultation?

Before we touch your hair, we take time to understand you — your hair history, your daily routine, your biggest frustrations and your goals. The more you share, the better the result.

We'll look at your curl type, assess your hair's health, and talk through what's realistic to achieve. We also encourage you to bring photos of styles you love — ideally of someone with a similar curl type to yours.

Will you teach me how to style my curls at home?

Yes — this is a core part of every appointment. Teaching you how to care for and style your own curls is just as important to us as the cut itself. We'll walk you through washing, conditioning and product application tailored specifically to your hair type and lifestyle.

Many of our clients say Natacha is the first hairdresser who ever took the time to actually teach them about their hair — and that education is what makes the lasting difference.

Do you sell products I can use at home?

Yes — we stock a carefully curated range of curly hair products, including brands like Rizvan, Clever Curl, LOHY, Everescents, K18, OLAPLEX and more. Every product has been personally tested and chosen by Natacha for wavy, curly and coily hair.

We'll never pressure you to buy anything — we'll share what we genuinely think will work for your hair, and you can decide from there.

Services

Can you help with frizz and dryness?

Yes, we will recommend products and treatments to manage frizz and improve hair moisture. We will also teach you how to style your hair to reduce frizz and enhance its natural beauty.

What styles and cuts work best for curly hair?

We will suggest styles and cuts that complement your natural curls, taking into account factors like face shape, personal preferences, lifestyle, and hair condition.

Do you cater to women wearing the veil?

Yes, we do. Please mention it when you are booking your appointment so we can ensure there won't be any men booked at the same time as your appointment, and we will block the outside view for your convenience.

Do you cater to men?

Yes, we do cater to men. However, please note that we are not barbers, so special fading techniques are not our specialty.

Do you cater to kids?

Yes, we do cater to kids from age 2. They are welcome, and we have toys and special chairs for them.

Do you do provide hair colour services?

We do! We offer regrowth / greys coverage as well as balayage and highlight/foils. We use O&M colour, Australian-made, PPD and Resorcinol-free professional hair colour, very gentle and perfect for curly hair.

What products do you use at the salon?

We use mostly organic, vegan Australian-made products, curly girl approved.

Cuts & Methods

Why is curly hair cut differently to straight hair?

Curly hair behaves completely differently wet versus dry. When wet, curls stretch and lose their shape — a standard wet cut can leave you with a very different result once your hair dries and springs back. Each curl also grows at its own rate and in its own direction.

Cutting curly hair dry means we can see your true curl pattern, natural volume and how your hair actually sits — so there are no surprises when it dries. It also allows us to work with your shrinkage, not against it.

What is the rëzo cut?

Natacha is rëzo-certified. The rëzo cut focuses on maintaining an even length all the way around the head, preserving as much length and volume as possible while creating beautiful movement and shape.

A key benefit of the rëzo cut is that your hair looks great whether you wear it curly or straight — the cut maintains a uniform length in both states, unlike some other dry-cutting methods. It is ideal for curl lovers who want to keep their length while gaining definition and shape.

What is the cadō cut?

Natacha is also cadō-certified. The cadō cut (from the Latin "cadō", meaning to fall or to cascade) is a four-part dry cutting method designed to create beautiful cascading layers, volume and a balanced shape.

What makes the cadō cut different is how customisable it is — each of the four parts can be used or left out depending on what your hair needs. Whether you're looking for more definition, a rounder shape, long cascading layers or enhanced bounce without sacrificing length, the cadō method can be tailored to your specific curl pattern and density.

It works beautifully across all curl types — from loose waves to tight coils — and because it's done dry, your stylist can see exactly how each curl falls naturally and shape accordingly.

What is the Curly Girl Method?

The Curly Girl Method (CGM) is an approach to curly hair care developed by Lorraine Massey. Its core principles include avoiding sulfates, silicones and heat, and instead focusing on moisture, gentle cleansing and enhancing your hair's natural texture.

Natacha discovered the CGM in 2010 and says it changed her life — and her hair. After almost 10 years of refining her approach, she developed her own method built on that foundation. We incorporate CGM principles throughout our services and will help you understand what works for your specific hair type.

Which cutting method is right for me — rëzo or cadō?

Both are dry cutting methods performed by a certified specialist, but they have different strengths:

  • The rëzo cut cuts all curls to an even length, creating balanced volume and a rounded shape. It's ideal if you want versatility — your hair will look great both curly and straight.
  • The cadō cut uses a four-part customisable system to create cascading layers and shape. It's particularly well suited to clients wanting more movement, definition and a tailor-made result for their specific curl pattern and density.

During your consultation, Natacha will assess your hair and recommend the best approach for your curl type, goals and lifestyle.

What curl types do you work with?

All of them. We work with the full spectrum:

  • Wavy hair (type 2) — loose S-waves and beach waves
  • Curly hair (type 3) — loose to bouncy spirals
  • Coily hair (type 4) — tight coils and kinks, including 4c

We also work with children's curls — many families come to us for their little ones' first specialist cut.

How often should I get a curly haircut?

This depends on your hair type, goals and how fast your hair grows. As a general guide:

  • Every 3–4 months to maintain shape and remove split ends
  • Every 6 months if you're growing your hair out

We'll give you a personalised recommendation based on your hair during your appointment.

Colour

Do you offer colour services?

Yes. We exclusively use O&M (Original & Mineral) colours — PETA-certified cruelty-free, formulated with native Australian botanical extracts, and 100% free from harsh chemicals like ammonia, resorcinol and PPD. Zero nasties.

If you're interested in colour, please get in touch before booking as some colour services require a separate consultation or may need to be combined with your cut appointment.
